Kundli matching - also called Guna Milan or Ashtakoot Milan - is the traditional Vedic method for checking marriage compatibility between two birth charts. It's one of the most requested astrology services in India, and also one of the most misunderstood. Here's what actually happens when two charts are matched, and what the resulting score really tells you.

What is Guna Milan?

Guna Milan compares the Moon sign (Rashi) and birth star (Nakshatra) of both partners across eight specific categories, called "Kootas." Each Koota measures a different dimension of compatibility - temperament, health, wealth potential, emotional harmony, and so on. Each Koota is worth a set number of points, and the total across all eight adds up to a maximum of 36 points.

The eight Kootas, briefly

  • Varna (1 point) - spiritual/work compatibility
  • Vashya (2 points) - mutual attraction and control in the relationship
  • Tara (3 points) - health and general wellbeing as a couple
  • Yoni (4 points) - physical and sexual compatibility
  • Graha Maitri (5 points) - mental compatibility, based on the friendship between the Moon-lords of both charts
  • Gana (6 points) - temperament compatibility (each Nakshatra falls into a Deva, Manushya, or Rakshasa Gana)
  • Bhakoot (7 points) - compatibility of the Rashis themselves, linked to family prosperity
  • Nadi (8 points) - genetic and health compatibility, considered the single most important Koota

What does the score actually mean?

Traditionally, 18 points and above out of 36 is considered an acceptable match, and above 24 is considered very favorable. But here's the part most quick "kundli matching" tools skip: a high total score with a Nadi Dosha (zero points on the Nadi Koota) or Bhakoot Dosha is treated very differently from a genuinely clean match, since those two specific Kootas are weighted so heavily in real interpretation. A 32/36 score with a Nadi Dosha present isn't automatically a green light - it needs a real astrologer to look at the full context, not just the headline number.

Why a "good score" isn't the whole story

Guna Milan is one input, not the entire verdict. A serious compatibility reading also looks at the 7th house of both charts (the house of partnership), the placement and strength of Venus and Mars, and whether either chart carries a Manglik (Kuja) Dosha that needs to be checked against the other chart specifically. Two charts can score well on Guna Milan and still need remedies discussed by an astrologer before the family treats it as settled.
